Summary of Ireland
Ireland has a lot of rich history dating back all the way to 6000 BC. When looking at Ireland there is so much information that makes their country so amazing, unfortunately I will be only covering a little bit of information. Looking at the history of Ireland is very important to see where there country came from. I also will be touching on the resources that Ireland offers and how this makes their country important. Finally I will be talking about a major obstacle that impacted Ireland’s history. All of this information makes Ireland the great place that it is today.
Dating back to 6000 BC is when the first settlers settled in Ireland. The first settlers were hunters and fishers. They did a lot of their fishing along Ireland’s eastern coast. This was a perfect location for these settlers because it was so close to a major body of water. The next big group of people to venture to Ireland were The Gaels, a celtic speaking people from Western Europe. The Gaels first settled in Ireland around 600 through 150 BC, others would soon travel to Ireland as well and make a home from their selves. By the time of Christ, the first century, Ireland was split up into five different kingdoms, also known as the “Five Fifths of Ireland”. Throughout Ireland’s history it faced a rough period where it was getting constantly attacked by The Vikings. This would create a lot of problems for Ireland, but with time they would get through it. Ireland has gone through multiple forms of government throughout its rich history. The most recent form of government was acted in 1920 and is called “Government of Ireland Act”. This new act split up Ireland into two separate parliaments in the North and South of Ireland. This would be the basis of government for Ireland for years.
When looking Irelands resources it is hard to decide which one is the most important to Ireland. Their main source of natural resources is their oil and gas. Ireland has their own source of oil and gas which makes their country thrive compared to others. Having oil and gas in your country is an important factor when looking at the overall value of a country. Another major resource Ireland has to offer is its source of minerals. Ireland has a significant amount of zinc and lead, this is important to its country because it gives jobs to their citizens because people have to mine these minerals. The last major resource that Ireland has to offer is its major source of fisheries. Ireland is known for having some of the best fishing grounds in the world. Since Ireland is an island there is water surrounding it at all times. This makes fishing a crucial resource. Ireland has a mild climate which is favorable for fishing. Along with being surrounded by water, Ireland has a vast amount of rivers and lakes imbedded in their country. This makes fishing an even bigger resource for Ireland. Ireland is full of many natural resources that helps make their country thrive.
Finally, there have been some hardships for Ireland and the people that live there. Ireland has problems just like any country would have, but one of the biggest hardships that affected the settlement in Ireland was The Great Potato Famine of 1846. The potato was an important food source in the eighteen hundreds for the growing population of Ireland. The potato was an important crop to the citizens of Ireland because you did not need a lot of land to grow a lot of potatoes. A small amount of land could feed a typical family. Unfortunately in 1846 a famine had hit the land of Ireland. This disaster started in 1845 when the potato crops were getting destroyed by infection of fungal disses. These fungus would rot the potato in the ground, destroying crops all over Ireland. Throughout the famine many people died or migrated to different countries. Irelands population went from over 8 million to 4.5 million by the end of the century. This was and is still today the biggest struggle the Ireland has ever faced. This was the biggest obstacle Ireland has faced, and it changed what Ireland could have been.
Overall Ireland is quite an amazing place. Throughout history you can see how their country has grown exponentially. This country started off nothing more than a stranded island, throughout time people have made this country into the amazing place that it is today. None of it would be possible if it wasn't for all the rich resources Ireland possess and all the hardships that Ireland has faced. Ireland is still growing today, better and better every year it is a country.
