Religion in Ireland
In Ireland, the main religion of the country is Christianity. Christianity in Ireland became prevalent because of the people of Ireland wanting to over throw the British Imperialism and attempt to get back to their countries Gaelic ways. The desire to over throw Britain made the people of Ireland to come together and unite as a country to gain its independence. This led to many movements and revolutions that would lead Ireland away from Britain. Since this was happening their was a lot of political problems that were happening as well. Since Christianity was so prevalent in Ireland the Roman Catholic Church decided to step in. Since the Irish people needed something to bond them all together since they were no longer part of British rule they had to have one thing in common, and that was Christianity. This is when Irelands main religion became Christianity.
Christianity has played a major role in Irelands social development of the country. The Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has has much as 3.2 million followers. People grow up and live through the church in Ireland. In the past, over ninety percent of schools were run by the churches. Religion has played a huge role in the development of Ireland and its citizens. In a recent survey, over 92 percent of Irelands population were Roman Catholic. This impact means that almost everyone in their country is connected through religion. Religion is a part of their everyday life and what makes Ireland such an amazing place, there are not too many other places in the world where everyone is connected through one central thing.
If you went to visit Ireland you would need to check out some of Irelands sacred places. A lot of these cites are sacred due to their connection to religion in the past. One of the more sacred places in Ireland is Clonmacnoise which is in the County Offlay. Clonmacnoise is a monastic site overlooking the River Shannon in County Offaly. The extensive ruins include a cathedral, castle, round tower, numerous churches, two important high crosses, and a large collection of early Christian grave slabs. This is just one of many sacred places in Ireland. A couple other sacred places are the Dowth, the Gallarus Oratory, and the Rock of Cashel. These are all fantastic spots in Ireland to get a little insight of the history of Ireland.
Throughout Irelands history there has been always a problem with religion and politics butting heads. Since the church controlled a lot of the school systems, they often preached and taught religion. The problem with this is to someone who is not religious can get frustrated that they are teaching everyone about religion . This brought up a lot of problems with politics due to the fact that so many people in Ireland were brought up religious. There has been a lot of problems between these two things, unfortunately it is still not in a good state today even though they have made some changes since the 1920’s when this was a big problem.
It is hard to argue that religion hasn't played a major role in Ireland through out its rich history. It was the basis when starting the country, it is how most people were educated, and over 90 percent of Ireland is religious. Without religion in Ireland their country would be something completely different. Religion in Ireland is why Ireland is such of a great place that it is today.

Popular Food in Ireland
The picture to the left is a very popular dish in Ireland, corned beef and cabbage. Corned beef and cabbage is like spaghetti and meatballs to Italy.
Recipe
Directions:
Irish immigrants to America lived alongside other “undesirable” European ethnic groups that often faced discrimination in their new home, including Jews and Italians. Members of the Irish working class in New York City frequented Jewish delis and lunch carts, and it was there that they first tasted corned beef. Cured and cooked much like Irish bacon, it was seen as a tasty and cheaper alternative to pork. And while potatoes were certainly available in the United States, cabbage offered a more cost-effective alternative to cash-strapped Irish families. Cooked in the same pot, the spiced, salty beef flavored the plain cabbage, creating a simple, hearty dish that couldn’t be easier to prepare. Retrieved April 21, 2015, from http://www.history.com/news/hungry-history/corned-beef-and-cabbage-as-irish-as-spaghetti-and-meatballs Corned beef comes from the brisket and silverside (just under the top side of a cow) of a cow. It is local to Ireland due to how many cows Ireland has. There is no connection between corned beef and religion. The onlly major connection corned beef has to Ireland is that it was a sign of wealth in the past. Meat was a sign of wealth in the past because it was so expensive to afford. |
