I just finished creating a report on the status of education in Ireland which you will find on my Political and Economics page. I invite you to make comments on this report.
Welcome everyone to my blog, in this blog I will be talking all about Ireland. The reason I will be talking about Ireland is because I have traveled there and fell in love with the country. During this blog I encourage all of you to comment and give me suggestions how to make my blog better. I am not experienced with writing blogs so any information will help.02/24/2015
When looking at the societal role of men and women in society in Ireland and how it has changed, you need to get a brief history of the gender roles in the past. “Until the last few years of the 1990s Ireland had the reputation of being the most sexually repressed country in Europe, where women were second class citizens and the Catholic church ruled virtually unchallenged. (sociallist). Things have changed dramatically since this point in Irelands history. The role of man in the past have been the working man and the role of taking trips and playing outside with the children. Throughout history things have been pretty set in stone with the gender roles, for the better, things have changed dramatically from the old roots of Ireland. Women throughout history in Ireland have been primarily a second class citizen throughout history in Ireland. Women did not have much purpose in the early 1900’s in Ireland, they barely had any rights. Women only went through primary school, only very few went to extra schooling. If they did go to secondary schools they would often be trained to be nurses and teachers. Women also found themselves marrying at a young age and raising large families, the women were in charge of staying at home and taking care of house chores and cooking. Finally in 1918 women gained the right to vote, the start of change in Ireland for women. About fifty years later, Women’s Right Movement spread throughout Ireland. This was the first step for women in the right direction, this was the first of many changed to come. “Women began to demand greater equality, Girls had option to do science subjects for first time, Women are entitled to equal pay as men (skool).” These were just a couple of the major changes that were going through Ireland’s history for women. Now a days women have all the equal rights as men, equality for both genders is here to stay in Ireland. When looking at the role of men throughout Ireland’s history not much has changed, besides women becoming more equal to men. Men were primarily the worker of the house, they were the sole provider for the family while the women took care of the house and children. The men usually would take the families on vacation and trips and usually play with the children. The man of the family had a big responsibility for their family. Now a days in Ireland the mans role hasn't changed much, but now it is not a big deal if they are the stay at home parent. It is also pretty common that both parents in the relationship work. The societal role of men and women in society in Ireland has changed dramatically over time. It has gone from a time where women had barely any rights and now they have all the same rights as men. The role of men has decreased with dominance in the relationship to being more of an equal part. Society has put a lot of restraints on the role of men and women in society throughout history, it is good that we finally are equal. |
